Athena Bitcoin sells Litecoin!

What is Litecoin?

Litecoin is a digital currency, like Bitcoin, that can be used as "digital cash" via the Internet. Launched in 2011, Litecoin is the longest running cryptocurrency around besides Bitcoin. Compared to its bigger brother, Litecoin features faster confirmation times and a lower transaction volume. This means you can send litecoin quicker and for much less cost per transaction. Typical fees are between one to twenty cents USD! Several online merchants and services, including Backpage.com, accept Litecoin because of these lower fees.

Does my Athena Bitcoin Wallet work with Litecoin?

At the current time, no. The Athena Bitcoin Wallet is Bitcoin-only for now. However, you may use a Litecoin address (beginning with "L") from the website or person you wish to pay directly at the ATM. If you can bring an image of a Litecoin QR code that would be best. Otherwise you may type the Litecoin address in manually. Be careful to type it in exactly as displayed to you.

Can I use Litecoin on my phone or computer?

Yes! There are third-party wallets and services available to help you store and transact with Litecoin on your phone or desktop computer. We can recommend that you look into the following options, but we cannot guarantee their functionality, security, or suitability for any purpose, nor do we provide technical support for these wallets: Coinomi (Android), LoafWallet (Apple iOS), Jaxx (mobile/desktop), Electrum-LTC (desktop), LiteVault (web-based), Ledger (hardware), Trezor (hardware), and LiteAddress (paper wallets / cold storage).

Bitcoin or Litecoin? Which one should I use?

Both have valid uses both as a payment form and as a speculative asset. Bitcoin is the most valuable and most widely used cryptocurrency. If you are looking to make smaller payments using a digital currency or are looking for the fastest possible transaction times and your destination also accepts Litecoin/LTC, then Litecoin will likely be the best choice for your payment. You can purchase it directly from our ATMs with cash; the process is nearly the same as buying bitcoin. Just remember that Litecoin addresses begin with "L" and you will need a valid address to receive litecoin.

Where can I find an Athena ATM that sells Litecoin?

Litecoin is available at ALL Athena ATMs in our network! Please see our Locations page for your nearest ATM!

Using LiteCoin

Step One: Purchase Litecoin

Before purchasing Litecoin at one of our Athena Bitcoin ATM's, download the LoafWallet mobile wallet in order to make the purchasing process easier. Any of the Litecoin mobile wallets that are listed above may be used but we suggest the LoafWallet mobile wallet as it allows you to send and receive Litecoin very quickly. Purchasing Litecoin is identical to purchasing bitcoin. For a set of instructions on how to purchase Bitcoin, see our "Instructions" tab above. Since you will have already downloaded the app, you should not have to set up a new wallet but if you chose to not upload the app before purchasing Litecoin, create a new wallet.

Step Two: Securing Your Litecoin

Much like Bitcoin, it is incredibly important to keep your security phrase safe. Once you have downloaded the app and created a wallet, write down the security phrase and keep it in a safe, secure location. The security phrase is a list of random words that can be used to help recover your account if you forget your login information. You should not share this phrase with anyone else.

Step Three: Creating Transactions

Sending Litecoin

Once you have written down your security information. The send screen should come up on your mobile app. LoafWallet makes it simple to send Litecoin to another individual who has a Litecoin wallet. You will enter the Litecoin wallet address of the individual that you will be sending your Litecoin to. Due to the long nature of addresses, it may be best to copy and paste the address to ensure that you are sending your Litecoins to the right party. If you are in the same room as the person receiving your Litecoin, you may click on the small QR code at the end of the "pay to" box to scan the other individuals QR code without having to type in their address. You will then enter in the amount of Litecoin that you wish to send. You can enter this amount in either USD or LTC. Once you have filled out the required fields, you may hit send and send your Litecoin!

Receiving Litecoin

In order to receive Litecoins from a sender, you will hit the "receive" tab at the bottom of the screen. There are many options when choosing how to receive your Litecoin. The app defaults to your QR code, which allows the individual to scan your code to send you Litecoin but if you chose to use another method, clicking "Receive" under the QR code provides you with several different receiving options. Those options are shown in the photo to the left. These options allow you to either send your address via an email or a text message as well as it allows you to request an amount from your sender. Once you have completed the sending and receiving process, your transactions will be organized under the history tab at the bottom of the screen.
